Beginner level – No experience needed
April 12-14, 2019
This class can be enjoyed by everyone!
We will start by creating one-part “blow molds”, made primarily with simple materials like clay, wax, plaster and silica. We will review the possibilities, limitations, and applications for this type of mold. Students are not required to be professional sculptors; just bring creative enthusiasm, a few drawings, objects you are interested in seeing made in glass, or just images you like.
Students are also not required to be skilled glass blowers: think “simple bubble” in any color you like, blown into a hot mold and knocked off the pipe. Most of our time will not be spent in the hot shop, but sculpting and preparing our molds. Because of the process, limited time frame and kiln space, the objects will be limited in scale to less than 6″ x 6″ x 6″;. The models you will make cannot have appendages or long protrusions or many undercuts. The models can have intricate surface detail and low relief on a central core (think 3-D head or simple form with surface detail).
Nelson brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, so bring a sketch book or notepad. This class will be very hands on, and you will get dirty, we promise! We WILL have fun, and we look forward to seeing your ideas.
